Peacock AngelThe Peacock Angel

Tawûsê Melek or ملك طاووس

The Peacock Angel is a major component of the religious symbolism of the Yazidi people, a Kurdish-speaking community that claim to follow the oldest religion in the world. Ancient components of Indo-Iranian beliefs combined with aspects of Judaism, Christianity and Islam make up today’s Yazidi practice. This painting includes the sun and the peacock in the form of the buteh (paisley shape). The ancient cuneiform script, at bottom, while it does not actually read as any words, is used by the Yazidi to reference their long history.
