I will be demonstrating Chinese/Japanese style brush painting techniques on paper that are applicable to working on pottery. To follow along you will need the correct combination of brush, ink and paper.
INTRO SET
The easiest way to get started is to purchase the introductory set. It includes everything you will need except watercolors. | INTRO BRUSH PAINTING SET
WATERCOLORS
I will be demonstrating how to load two colors onto a brush, so it would be good to have at least two colors available. a burnt sienna/indigo combination works very well, but feel free to use a color combination that appeals to you.
If you already have watercolors please go ahead and use those. This set of watercolors is designed for the needs of Chinese or Japanese brush painting on paper and is quite affordable. | WATERCOLOR SET
INDIVIDUAL PRODUCTS
You can also purchase items individually rather than as a set.
BRUSHES
The brush options below work well on paper as well as for working directly on bisque ware.
RECOMMENDED BRUSH: This is the same brush offered in the INTRO SET, above. This is a versatile brush at a very affordable price. The brush holds ink or color but has a stiffer feel and can come to a sharp point. If you have just one brush to do different types of strokes this is a good choice. | ORCHID BAMBOO BRUSH
BASIC COMBO: The Basic Combination Brush is a cheaper alternative to the Orchid Bamboo Brush. It is also versatile, but not as good quality. | BASIC COMBINATION BRUSH
SOFT BRUSHES: A selection of four sizes of very inexpensive soft brushes is available. These are good for applying glazes, stains or slips to pottery as they are very absorbent and very cheap. These are not the best brushes for working on paper nor the best option if you are applying acrylic paint to ceramics that have already been fired. | SOFT BRUSHES
INK
Chinese ink is traditionally made in the form of a block or stick and has to be ground on a special ink stone. For beginners I suggest buying bottled ink. | CHINESE INK
PAPER
I will be demonstrating brush painting techniques on traditional Chinese paper. Note that this paper comes in large sheets that you can cut down to whatever size is convenient for you. | DOUBLE SHUEN PAPER
If you want a large quantity of paper, this offer via Amazon.com is definitely a good deal: DOUBLE SHUEN PAPER VIA AMAZON
FELT
A piece of felt is needed to place under your paper when painting. A smaller piece of felt is included in the Intro Set, or you can purchase a larger piece. | FELT
